The summer has just begun, and already Los Angeles’ Y Luv has had a hectic one. The indie rock quartet released its latest EP, Take The Ride, in late May and have been playing shows to support it ever since. The band performed a special DJ set at Bonnaroo’s Silent Disco in mid-June and just wrapped up the crazy five-day-long Glastonbury festival in UK. They’ll be playing another hometown show at L.A.’s Bardot on July 15. Despite the chaos of being on the road, Y Luv’s vocalist/guitarist Freddy Janney was kind enough to chat with me about Bonnaroo, Take The Ride, and the new season of Arrested Development.
Katrina Nattress: You DJed at Bonnaroo a few weeks ago! How was it?
Freddy Janney: it was amazing. To be able to perform in a place like that is a dream come true.
KN: What were your highlights?
FJ: DJ sets are interesting ‘cause they give you more time to relax and enjoy the music as a listener. You can really be one with the crowd in a different way than performing everything live. So a lot of highlights were of us just dancing with everyone there. Also, I took my headphones off during a mash up of The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside” we made and everyone was singing the words!
KN: Is a silent disco as bizarre as it sounds?
FJ: it was one of the dopest dance parties I’ll ever go to
KN: How’s the rest of the tour been going?
FJ: We had a wild night at Glastonbury last night and have not gone to sleep yet. The festival only officially started today. Music starts Friday. It’s going well.
KN: I noticed an Arrested Development reference on your Facebook timeline. Have you had a chance to watch the Fourth Season yet?
FJ: Dude, they did such a good job with it! I love it. Definitely going to watch it all more than once.
KN: You recently released your latest EP, Take The Ride. How would you say this collection differs from your previous releases?
FJ: We’re figuring ourselves out. We’re slowly becoming capable of more.
KN: You’ve steadily released an EP each year since 2011. When can we expect a full-length?
FJ: We’ve got a lot of demos right now. It’d be awesome if we had an album worth of new material to release soon, but we can’t force that. Quality over quantity.
KN: It seems like releasing a handful of EPs before a full-length is becoming a trend in the modern music industry. Would you agree?
FJ: For us it’s just been about what we’ve been able to afford and the material we feel is ready to release, but I do think it’s a trend. It’s cool. It just means more new material more often. And we all want more.
KN: I’ve been listening to your Glastonbury mixtape on Spotify and it’s solid! What’s your go-to “get pumped up” song before playing an important gig?
FJ: Us making bad jokes is usually what happens. Although we walked out to M83′s “Raconte-moi une histoire” before our last show. That was dope.
KN: What are you looking forward to most at Glastonbury?
FJ: All of it. Glastonbury is heaven.
KN: What’s next for Y LUV?
FJ: Shows, new music. Keep it rollin’, man.
