San Francisco – We’re in the thick of festival season and this weekend brings one of the best festivals for new bands. Outside Lands offers a broad spectrum of acts from different genres over four main stages, while in addition offering a comedy venue and a DJ tent to boot. Like many festivals of this vain, Outside Land’s undercard is chock-full of new, up and coming acts hoping to one day claim one of the festival’s coveted headlining slots. While we can’t predict the future, we can shine some light on some newer acts spicing up this year’s lineup. Here are some we think you’ll like:
Dum Dum Girls
Saturday, Lands End Stage, 12:20-1:10 PM -For fans of: Frankie Rose (who is actually a former member), Pat Benatar, Blondie
Dee Dee Penny and her ragtag gang of LA ladies have reinvented the concept of the ‘girl group,’ with each and every album they have put out. Each album plays to a different style, a different sound, most recently by turning up the synths and jacking up the guitar reverb for this year’s smash Too True. The Dum Dum Girls have been touring nonstop for the past several months, yet their onstage presence and altogether cooperation with one another makes every show seem like the very first. Local Natives
Saturday, Lands End Stage, 3-4 PM - For fans of: Fleet Foxes, Grizzly Bear, Neil Young
Los Angeles band Local Natives burst onto the scene with the release of their debut LP, Gorilla Manor, back in 2009. Last year, they released their sophomore follow-up, Hummingbird to much acclaim. Local Natives blends colorful, soothing vocal harmonies with tender lyrical content and artful, thumping, instrumentation to create an aurally appeasing, symphonic sound that lays like a welcome sticky, earwormy paste upon the listener’s eardrums. Courtney Barnett
Sunday, Panhandle Stage, Sunday 4:20-5 PM - For fans of: Regina Spektor, Liz Phair, Bonnie Raitt
Australia’s latest addition to the singer-songwriter canon comes in the form of lo-fi chanteuse Courtney Barnett. Ms. Barnett became popular with the release of 2013’s double EP The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas, released in 2013, and earned the praise of fans and critics alike with her American festival debut at Coachella earlier this year. Barnett’s gritty style and honest, often humorous lyricism make for a truly relatable and delightful listening experience. For more on Courtney Barnett go HERE.
