At The Woods last night watching Blood Beach open for (former BestNewBands.com Artists in Residence) Rumspringa and Bear Hands, the very first thing I noticed was the hair. The self-described “garage/basement band” is blessed with four heads of shiny, flowing hair. Check out the video of their song “Soft Serve” to see for yourself.

You’d think a band that has a sound as detailed and complicated as Blood Beach would be bogged down by the hair in their faces- in fact, they’re not. Camella plays the theremin, an eerie sounding device controlled only by placing her hands near it (she also plays the saxophone and what I think is a ukulele), Ethan and Shane jam on their guitars/bass (Shane also plays the keyboard) and Cody keeps time on the drums. And they all do it pretty much hidden behind their curtains of hair. Perhaps they’re hiding; perhaps they’re more comfortable without their faces showing. Who knows? (You can find out by watching my interview with them!) All I can say is that I was impressed by this young band’s unique sound and quirky ways.
Blood Beach played all the songs from their self-titled EP, entertaining the crowd. I saw many people dancing and bobbing to their performance. Shane made the crowd laugh by speaking into a reverberating microphone in between numbers, often asking the mixing board how much time they had left. The band even stayed on longer than expected because Rumspringa was caught in a snow storm driving up from L.A.
For a band that claims to not be used to performing on a stage, they put on an energetic and entertaining show. Their love of music and performing makes them a great act to see. Check out the video below for an interview with them. They also played ping-pong with us after the show. How much fun is that?!
