Fiction Plane played last night, November 15th 2010, at the Mercury Lounge in NYC and it was beautiful. They have a sound reminiscent of Stereophonics but imagine Sting taking over for band front-man Kelly Jones. That’s both a compliment and genetics since Fiction Plane’s lead singer, Joe Sumner, is Sting’s son. Vocal resonance is where the comparison stops though, and Fiction Plane holds the ephemeral candle of the indie rock-pop twist and their energetic style is nicely off-set by the whipped vocals and contagious lines that had the crowd jumping up and down.
Two Sisters by Fiction Plane by BestNewBandscom
The Globes opened, and performed solidly although their stage presence was an after-thought compared to Fiction Plane’s encore-worthy performance. You rarely go to smaller concert venues and find an audience ready to sing along, but the fans rendition of, “It’s A Lie” and “Two Sisters” nearly drowned out the band. Fiction Plane functions like a band that knows that they will be big. They give a modest yet powerful performance. No exaggerated antics that give the pseudo-appeal of great shows; they stand on stage and play their music and get so into it that you could close your eyes and still have a fantastic time.
The last song of the set, “You Know You’re Good” reminded everyone what wanting more feels like and the energy was definitely at its peak as the show drew to a close with the heartfelt and light-hearted “la, la, la, la, la” that holds the songs chorus coupled with the sturdy bass-guitar duet and heavy instrumentals that distinguish the song.
Fiction Plane, please come back to New York City.
