I hadn’t been to a weekend show at Chicago’s Schubas in sometime. That being said, I was excited to go see On an On this past Friday. By the time I walked through the main bar part squeezing through the drinking folk and opened the doors to enter the back room, I remembered why I avoided weekend shows.
As the band did a quick set up and sound check they also had someone running around adding lights and a video projector. This was something I hadn’t seen done here in long time at Schubas, and luckily didn’t have to wait long to see how it translated on a small stage. As the opening notes sounded, lights and shapes were projected over the band onto a screen hanging behind them, which created an awesome visual. On an On’s brand of electronica worked beautifully with the bright colors and trippy visuals. A group of gentlemen behind me that had originally come to the show for an opening band but stayed based another crowd members recommendation may have stated it best, “They are soothing without being annoying or boring.” I couldn’t have agreed more.

In spite of being newer to the scene, the band has already made connections, opening for other up and coming bands, like Walk The Moon. it’s a perfect time for a band like this to start getting the attention they deserve. Their debut album Give In slated to be released on January 29. I anticipate this coming year to be a big one for this band.
“Ghosts,” the first release from their upcoming debut album was the perfect indicator of what to expect from the band’s live show. The music video itself may have you initially confused, but you’ll put that behind you when conclude how cool it looks and works with the music. I found myself entranced in the vocals and are songs like “The Hunter” are already being well received by their fans.
The dance beats were something I had not originally expected from this band, but seeing them live, I caught myself dancing along to them as they flowed perfectly from song to song. This band comes off as being a group of smart, talented musicians, whose visual conceptions that aren’t there for without reason, which in turn is a perfect mix of art and music.
Having just announced upcoming dates for 2013, this is a band I would definitely try and catch before everyone gets their hands on the new album.
