Lucky for Pickathon goers, if you missed a set of a band you were itching to see, each act plays at least two sets on different stages throughout the weekend. At the last day of the festival, however, if you haven’t caught your favorite bands by now you better make sure to do it today! While it meant a busy day, we were able to catch up with Yellowbirds, Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside, Shabazz Palaces and Parquet Courts.
I opened my day with Yellowbirds in the Workshop Barn. With an announcer to the side of the stage occasionally fielding questions or comments to frontman Sam Cohen, this set truly felt like a showcase session rather than just a festival set. Despite those occasionally odd interjections from the “announcer,” Yellowbirds played a fluid set that evenly balanced tracks from their new album, Songs from the Vanished Frontier, and their older songs. It was peaceful but lively.
Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside played their Sunday set in the Galaxy Barn, perhaps the festival’s most “small club-like” setting. Perhaps it was the influence of the horses just outside the room (yes, there were horses everywhere) combined with Sallie Ford’s brand of lively country, but this truly felt like a barn yard square dance (although there wasn’t that much dancing).
Shabazz Palaces is perhaps the oddest act for the venue at Pickathon. When we caught them at Sub Pop Silver Jubilee, they welcomed the forceful crowd of hip-hop lovers who seemed to flock to Jubilee for this kind of scene – a scene which was primarily absent from the farmy festival. Shabazz Palaces, true to form, made it work. While they didn’t soften their hard rap edge, the slightly smaller and more mellow crowd than I’m sure Shabazz is used to did nothing to mellow their own performance.
Parquet Courts played the Fir Meadows stage, which had the main stage vibe and gave the band that similar rock-star vibe that King Tuff was able to achieve the day before. Directly following a string of big names on the two main stage – Felice Brothers and Kurt Vile – Parquet Courts were able to keep the audience engaged through their own brand of rock and roll.
Very, very unfortunately Foxygen had to cancel their Pickathon shows (along with some of their other northwest gigs) because vocalist Sam France broke his leg and had to get surgery. We wish him a speedy recovery!
