This past week was especially full of best new music, and heavy on the garage surf rock tip. Trixie Whitley was the most impressive show I caught live, while Tomten provided a “blissful Baroque-indie-dream-pop” experience for Brigit. Singer/songwriter Jenny O. was our latest Artist of the Week, and we reviewed brand new albums from Bleeding Rainbow and Local Natives. Additional attention-grabbing sounds brought to you this week by:
Burnt Ones, “Fountain of Youth” – This may be the closest thing to a new T. Rex tune.
La Luz, “Call Me in the Day” – This Seattle-based girl band has got the 60’s surf rock sound down pat. Their jam “Damp Face” is also a pretty sweet instrumental, as well as being the title track from their recently released tape. Yeah, tape.
Grave Babies, “No Fear” – oh my goth, Grave Babies are coming out with their most melodic and accessible tunes yet, while still keeping everything else that we love about them. This track is a free download, too, as the second single off their CRUSHER LP, due out later this month.
Birdcall, “Miracle Man” – There’s something seductively mischievous about this tune, which may be partly due to the percussion that resembles something like a ghost marching band down by a shipyard with bells clanging in the foggy night.
Helado Negro, “Dance Ghost” – Right now, this track is my sunny beach in the middle of a cold, grey winter.
