New York – More fresh tunes cropped up, plus new engaging pieces from a couple of our most recent additions to the BestNewBands.com family. On the ground in London we now have James Somerside, who contributed a preview for what is the most hyped and anticipated albums out this week – CHVRCHES The Bones of What You Believe. Our Nashville correspondent Caroline McDonald wrote one of the most gripping pieces I’ve read from her yet, reviewing minimalist trip hop artist FKA Twigs’ new EP. Our newest L.A. writer Ian Joulain saw Australian pop rockers The Rubens, and cited that “their musicianship and stage presence are that of a band well beyond their limited years,” and I reviewed the always lovely Lucius, who warmed my blood on a chilly rainy night.
For a sugary synth pop fix, Texas quintet Calhoun has us covered with “Reap/Sow,” the first single off the band’s PaperweightsEP, due out later this October.
This week’s slow jam is brought to you by Body Parts, who shared their new single “People” h that funky bass line that makes any song into a jam.
JMSN is an artist on the darker side of R&B, sounding a lot like another up and coming The Weeknd with new release “Walk Away.” He’s got a new EP coming out, and US tour dates with Active Child.
When a band description starts off with “When Emmylou Harris fronted Sonic Youth in a parallel universe…” that’s pretty ace marketing, and The Fire Tapes deliver a great dark psych track with “Skull & Xbones,” much in the vein of all the best Black Angels songs.
80′s post-punk and 90′s dream pop-influenced Toy Cities have shared a new video for their tune “Nostalgia Kills,” off their forthcoming debut EP produced by Chris Moore, who has worked with YYY and TV on the Radio.
Oxford, MS bedroom popper Dead Gaze has a new track, “Stay, Don’t Say” off his own debut album coming out October 22 on Fat Cat, as well as a tour supporting his MS indie pop brethren Dent May.
Josephine Foster harkens back to old-timey sounding saloon jangles, like what you might have heard in an actual speakeasy during prohibition era, while having an Old Fashioned with Emily Dickinson. “Sugarpie I’m Not The Same” is the latest ditty from an old fashioned woman who enjoys the harp and the piano, and can sass anyone with a lesser wit under the table.
Brooklyn psych rock band Ancient Sky has announced their latest album All Get Out, due out in November, and so we close out the mix with a slow drone psych trip of a track from one of their earlier releases.
