Whenever psychedelic pop sextet Of Montreal churns out a new album, it’s usually another fluid trip through ingenious musicianship, quirky transitions, and unbridled emotion. On their new album, False Priest, front men Kevin Barnes has constructed another rambunctious collection of whimsical and groovy gems.
“I Feel Ya Strutter,” the opening track, has Barnes signature yelping melodic vocals, ephemeral orchestral parts and a bridge that’s borderline disco-esque. The next track, “Our Riotous Defects,” opens with, “you are such a crazy girl” in a melodically strained singing voice that sounds slightly like a modern day Freddy Mercury, before brightly and suddenly transitioning into a burst of full on dancey synthesizers and crisp guitar strums.
Guitar verve on “Coquet Coquette” displays in great fashion that Of Montreal can still rock imaginatively and be straight up crazy with their varied style. Barnes also invited some guests, like Janelle Monae and Solange Knowles to join the party and their vocal contributions facilitate the greatness of this album even more.
By the time the album is over, you won’t know whether to dance, scream or jump for joy at the fact that Barnes has aggressively challenged musical experimentation once more and have succeeded nicely. Here’s to anyone who’s down to enjoy a funkified and psychedelic pop record with enough drum machines and sinuous and melodically frantic vocal lines to satisfy dedicated and newly found fans who love pop music that’s profoundly experimental as it is ambitious.
