It’s not often that as a musician that you can brag about touring with Wilco, Eddie Vedder, Pearl Jam and The Black Keys, but Liam Finn has done exactly that. Perhaps helped by his impressive pedigree (his father is legendary Australian musician Neil Finn of Crowded House), the indie rocker’s second proper studio album (along with an EP and two live sets), FOMO, is one of the most impressive to be released to date.

Considering his bloodlines, the immense pressure on Finn must have been enormous, but after listening to FOMO, the 27-year-old has certainly found his voice and for this, music fans around the globe should be happy.

The echoey “Neurotic World” showcases the artist’s terrific vocals, backed by a drum machine, synths and a groovy electric guitar. Though the song clocks in at a mere 3:01, Finn’s storytelling ability is terrific as he could make walking into a supermarket sound one of the most stressful things to happen in a person’s day. He captures the vibe of what it is like to be neurotic and his brand of dream-pop makes this song that much more impressive.

“Don’t Even Know Your Name” is a poppy number that will have hipsters across the globe dancing and bobbing their heads. The tune is more up-tempo than the aforementioned track and Finn shows his songwriting range on this stocatto rocker, which describes falling in love with a girl from a far, which afterall, is part of life, right? Finn sings so passionately that you can’t help but notice how far he’s come in such a short period of time. This is the type of song Matt & Kim wish they could write.

Yet again, Finn changes things up on “Roll Of The Eye.” This is the musician’s most melodic track, and at times, the music has a distinct Flaming Lips-vibe to it, especially with the interesting background sound going on.

Other tracks like “Real Late,” “Cold Feet” and “The Struggle” are indicative of what Finn has been listening to, either growing up or on the road. These songs have the fingerprints of some the greatest, including Springsteen, Reed and Waits. You can tell that Finn knows his history and isn’t afraid to use elements from some of the biggest names and apply it to his sound.

FOMO is a welcome addition to anyone’s record collection. By channeling what’s he learned over the years, in addition to his background, Liam Finn is an artist on the rise and soon enough, won’t be someone who is opening at large venues for legends, since he is on the way to becoming a legend in his own right.

Liam Finn’s album was released on Yep Roc and he is currently on tour in Australia at the time of review. Fortunately, Finn will be making a brief U.S. run in September and October after he plays the PJ20 festival in Wisconsin. Visit his website to see if he’s playing your town and if so, be sure to snatch up tickets as fast as you can.
