Indie-electronica pop is en vogue and that’s can be partially attributed to the innovative sounds of STRFKR. The Portland, Oregon-based outfit, which formed in 2007, has been one of the standard-bearers for the electro-pop wave that has grown in the years since the band’s beginnings. The band’s latest release, , is the band’s first LP with San Francisco-based Polyvinyl Records.
The album starts off with acoustic strumming on “Born,” leading you to think that the band is perhaps experimenting with a new sound. After the intro, the sound of reptiles is layered then the band’s familiar electro-pop commences. Singer Joshua Hodges, along with the expert turntable skills of Ryan Bjornstad power this track and deliver an overall solid opening track.
Another terrific song is the high energy “Julius,” where keyboards and dazzling ear candy reign supreme. This track sounds like it could be at home at either a London disco or a concert hall. The elements of rock and electronica are balanced in a manner where neither outdoes the other and you have no choice but to bob your head and tap your foot to the overwhelming power and beauty of the song. Simply put, “Julius” is a booty shakin, ass kicking tune.
Just when you are expecting a breather, the band picks up the pace on “Mystery Cloud.” This Madchester influenced tune would make the bands of Factory Records proud. Tony Wilson would have signed STRFKR based on this track alone. The up-tempo, keyboard driven tune differs from some of the songs because the layering of the vocals and Keil Corcoran’s quick, frantic drumming. The end is unique due to the sampling of a voice talking the acceptance of death.
From start to finish, Reptilians is a terrific album. STRFKR has found its sound and is very comfortable and confident. Whether you want it to be the soundtrack to your house party, hipster coffee shop or in-store music, this album has the perfect blend of catchiness that is blended in synths, drums, bass and vocals and is one of the best albums to come out before SXSW.
