In this special BONUS edition of BackStory, The Bewitched Hands take a moment to share the lyrics and tell us the story behind their single “Sea.”
The first version of the song “sea” was done by Baptiste alone, and has been worked by the whole band in studio, and in rehearsal for the gigs. That’s the way we do for most of the songs : everyone brings ideas, adds instrumental parts, and there’s a big work on vocal harmonies, we all sing but we sing in different ways, we all have different vocal tessitures, and we are used to deal with that…
The lyrics of the song are quite basic, so they don’t necessarily have to be explained or commented. It deals with stories of beach, sea, sun and friends, maybe simply because the music appeals to that kind of mood. We often work that way : as english is not our natural language, we don’t write songs to express feelings or deliver messages, we work in a phonetic, musical way.
What is interesting with the video is that what happens in it, (a fight between two clans of knights in cardboard armors) is miles away from the thematic of the Beach-Boys oriented lyrics, there is no beach, no sea, no boards… Some people were surprised by the gap between the two, but it’s natural for us, and we thought it would be much interesting, for the video, not to illustrate the lyrics. In fact it was made by a team of video makers called ab/cd/cd (http://www.abcdcd.com), so it illustrates an exterior point of view of the song, which is good for us. Moreover, the violence of fighting corresponds very well to the end of the song, but it’s an idea we would probably not have found by ourselves…
SEA
COUPLET
Here come the night guys
Grab your board on the beach
oh oh, have some fun on the sea
I’m falling down guys
I guess my mind is dreaming
oh oh, have a walk on the beach
Sun’s falling down guys
Bring me now what I need
oh oh, you known what I mean
Sorry for that guys
I guess my mind is dying
oh oh, oh let me down on my knees
REFRAIN
We gonna live, we gonna live forever
We gonna dream, we gonna dream togeher
We gonna fell, we gonna feel eachother
We gonna see, we gonna see you brother
PONT MARIANNE
He’s not as lucky as he seems
He’s not as crazy as he could be
