JanelleMonae

Picked By: Laurel Johnston

Two years ago I stumbled across a then little-known hip hop, Motown, and soul songstress by the name of Janelle Monae. I was combing through the Bonnaroo lineup for artists worth seeing, and hers was the first sound I fell in love with. I just couldn’t wrap my brain around such a wealth of noise and ideas coming from such a tiny, adorable young woman. Unfortunately, because of an 11-hour wait in line to get into Bonnaroo, I missed her performance and have been kicking myself ever since. Her music videos ‘Many Moons’ and ‘Tight Rope’ are captivating, and they showcase her ability to combine musical genres and art forms as effortlessly as artists like Beck or OutKast. If you’re in Los Angeles this weekend, don’t miss her show at the Hollywood Palladium this Saturday, October 30th. Go see her as an opening act now before she takes over the world and charges too much for admission. And she’d be right to. Her sophomore album The ArchAndroid is now available on iTunes.

of Montreal will be headlining the show, the current indie blog darlings and undisputed kings of their genre (hopefully) showing us something special in the spirit of Halloween. What began as a solo project of Kevin Barnes has now blossomed into a 14-person performance piece that can only be described as mind-boggling (See what my fellow BnB staffer Michael Rincon had to say about their latest album False Priest here). I’ve had the pleasure of seeing them perform twice, and I admit I was apprehensive of the ability of a live band to recapture the infinitely detailed sonic landscape created from (incredibly) just one man. But somehow, they did it. They filled the room with a spectrum of sounds, themes, and bizarre performance art that provoked the audience into attempting to understand what they were observing. Isn’t that the original and beautiful purpose of music and the arts: to get us to think? There will be plenty to think about this Saturday at the Palladium, so get your ticket now before they sell out!

Tickets for the show are $38.50 per person if purchased online; they are available now at the Live Nation website. Video recording, flash photography, removable lens cameras are not permitted without approval from the venue. Hollywood Palladium is located at 6215 West Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles.
