The Weekend Playlist: Lauren Novik’s Full of Summer Lovin’

The Weekend Playlist: Video Edition – Full of Summer Lovin’

I’ve been on this whole summer lovin’ kick- mostly because spring flings are so last season.  Literally.  Thus, give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning for good music- and this mix mistress will gladly oblige!

1. Hold Your Horse Is “You Show Up”- So, I can’t get enough of this song.  The punks’ lovestruck love song is enchanting and completely unexpected- with lyrics of sweet yearning embedded behind rough guitar riffs reminiscent of a whole other bad in the new black era.  To make things all the sweeter- and even more unexpected, you can download the wayward love song sans a fee on Hold Your Horse Is’ MySpace!

2. Easyworld “You and Me”- Now granted this other British import is a little older tune wise, but just because they broke up way back in yesteryear circa 2004, don’t write them off as classic rock just yet!  The lyrics are sultry, dirty, and cheeky with lines like “so come around and see me.  I mix a mean martini.  And maybe later beat me senseless.  And after dinner, eat me.”  It’s got all the makings of a hot summer night right there- and you can keep the season year round if you invest in the track.

3. Sweating Honey “This Town”- This Alaskan based band has got a little fiesta vibe going on this particular track.  Mostly focusing on their lust for music, the song still captures love and looking for it in all the wrong places- as the music industry is as appealing as it is addicting and dangerous!

4. Dark Room Notes “Love Like Nicotine”- Heading back across the pond with this group, Dark Room Notes is to us now what New Order was back in the day to the crazy 80’s kids.  They’re fun, unexpected, and the song is completely danceable!  You just can’t have hot fun in the summer time without attending a little action packed dance party.  Now you have a little tunage to play at said soiree.  And let’s face it- love can be just as addicting!

5. Bear Hands “What a Drag”- I have to say, Cantora Records is one hell of an impressive label with a great lineup of always enticing music.  Most recently I’ve had Bear Hands on VERY heavy rotation!  I’ve seen them live a couple times, and I highly recommend them!  When they get to “what a drag” the entire crowd is ALWAYS up and at it.  A great summer tune about lust and it’s many physical side effects.  And after affects.  And marks.  Catch them at CMJ this October!

6. Entice “The City” – I literally cannot stop playing this song either.  Forget heavy rotation- amp it up to repeat status!  I absolutely cannot wait to see these dudes rock the hell out of the Troubadour on August 24.  Hope to see everyone there and finally see them live because as everyone in L.A. knows, “this city is electrical- my sentimental heart won’t let go!”  (And neither should yours!)

We couldn’t find the video for The City, but you can listen to the song on the band’s MySpace!

7. Wolf Parade “Shine a Light”- After seeing them live at the Wiltern, and being a self-proclaimed loud and proud nightowl, I’m in lust with their upbeat lyrics “I keep my head uptight, I make my plans and night- And I don’t sleep, I don’t sleep, I don’t sleep till it’s light!”  And what better way to spend a sultry summer night than ending it with a little sunrise action?  My insomniac theater presents playlist is definitely blasting a little howl at the moon action.  Run with the pack, or you’re so yesterday.

8. Fun. “The Gambler” – So I’m rounding out the playlist with a little happy ending song.  Get your minds out of the gutter- I mean the happily ever after kind.  “And you asked me to dance, I knew nothing of romance, but it was love at second sight”- and let’s be honest, sometimes you need a little second try to get you off the ground and onto cloud nine.  Especially after a little post summer sun and its blinding light love-wise!  You can catch the fresh and (quite literally) Fun. Group at the Music Box on October 28!  Have some Fun.  Exclamation point.

Get on this playlist as our hot fun in the summer time days are numbered.  So go ahead, get a little lovestruck at first listen with these tempting tunes!
