Fans of Slang Chickens seem to go through a three part process upon discovering the band: first they’re intrigued by the name, then blown away by the crackling energy of their live performance, and then addicted to the way their songs manifest themselves in any number of ways. I find myself humming the chord changes to “Grandfather’s Gun” (streamed below) on a more than weekly basis along with the opening riff of “My Floor“. And who could forget the lyrics of “Punk Rock Fantasy” (featured in video above)? I went to two of their Monday night residencies at The Echo last month (for the exclusive BnB review, please click here) and this month the Los Angeles-based quartet was BestNewBands.com’s Artist in Residence. When I got the opportunity to finally meet the quartet in person last Friday, I jumped at the opportunity and the interview above is the result. When I went to see them perform at Cherrywood Coffehouse on Sunday, the band regretfully informed me that their performance would not go on as planned as the venue was running behind and they had to get back to Los Angeles. But once they found out we had made the drive outside of town just to see them, they immediately offered us an exclusive acoustic performance that we shot next to the venue. Check out Brandon’s ingenius bass substitute and how good they sound in such a stripped, intimate setting:
Slang Chickens‘ EP My Floor was just released on Psychedelic Judaism, and is now available for puchase on their Bandcamp page here.
