Preview: Treasure Island Festival

Treasure Island Festival is this weekend – October 13 and 14, on the man-made Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay. It’s a great lineup and there are lots of other activities besides the concerts, like a whole silent disco lineup, separate nights shows, local bands on the new Porch Stage in the Cove, and a giant ferris wheel surrounded by art installations and roaming performers. As for the regular lineup, here are some highlights:

First of all, Joanna Newsom, people. When you have a chance to see this harp playing fairy goddess, you take it.

M83 – That’s just going to be blissed out magic. I saw them once, and their shows have sold out too fast since. It’s worth it.

The Presets look like they took some of the puppets from Labyrinth and The Muppets and made headdresses out of them. And then proceeded to make electro rave dance music. If puppet rave wasn’t already a music genre, The Presets may have invented it.

Then there’s Araabmuzik, for those who need some funkier beats in their lives.

Wild Belle adds some pop, reggae, and ska to the funk, with a vintage 70s vibe.

And Public Enemy. Best case scenario: Joanna Newsom come out for a duet with Flavor Flav on stage. Or at least Flav wears her harp around his neck.

Check the entire schedule, play around with the official festival app, grab tix, and if you’re interested in a little bit (or actually, a pretty lengthy and detailed) history of the island and the Bay Area, you can educate yourself on that as well.
