Well, recently I saw Fred in Eugene, and he told me his first album was almost ready, and that he’d send me a copy. I’d only been home a few days when it arrived, and I love it. “Leaving Eugene” was my anthem for a while towards the tail end of my time there, and the album has rekindled my appreciation for “His Name is Glen” and “Mexican Guitar.”
The album is available in a lot of great places now, and I’d strongly encourage you to check it out– and maybe pick one up. Here’s a link to it on CDBaby. Trust me on this one, kids. He’s a talent.
The first time I saw Fred Van Vactor play live was at The Wandering Goat coffee house in Eugene, OR. Ehren and I had gone there to meet about promoting his upcoming album release party, and we’d (or maybe I’d) expected to enjoy Fred’s show as background music during our meeting. After all, I’ve ignored countless coffee shop and bar musicians while enjoying terrific conversations– why not Fred?
It turned out that “why not Fred” was because Fred is too charismatic on stage to ignore. His songs are clever and unexpected. His delivery is priceless. It only took a couple of songs before the entire coffee house had tuned in as though they’d all bought tickets to the Fred Van Vactor show.
