The boys of San Diego’s Range Rover took a moment out of their time working on their debut album to answer some of my burning questions about their eclectic sound, their multi-layered tracks and their musical process. Liz Livengood:  One word to describe your sound?

John: Collage-Like.

 

LL: Weirdest instrument ever used?

Austin: We sampled a recording of one of our friends running into trash cans and knocking them over for percussion recently, so maybe that.

 

LL: What’s a range rover?

Cody: That’s for you to decide.

 

LL: Who did the artwork for your album?

John: My twin sister, Rebecca Warlick, does all of our art. She goes to Pratt Institute in New York and has a style that coalesces really well with our own, so it’s been awesome to be able to collaborate with her.

 

LL: What’s the best song on it?

Austin: Who knows?

Cody: At this point, we couldn’t like some of our songs over others. We’re not even close to deciding on a final tracklist for the album anyway.

 

LL: How do you find your samples? Do you just hear a noise and record it sometimes because it sounds cool?

Austin: That’s definitely happened.

Cody: Well, we record them all ourselves, but there isn’t a systematic way that we make them. Some are from field recordings, and some we just decide to make on the spot.

John: Yeah, we don’t really have boundaries with what or how we sample, we just use whatever we feel we need to use in the given situation.

 

LL: What is it like to see you live? John, there’s no way you can play the guitar, bass AND percussion at the same time!

John: Well, that’s because I don’t! Our friend Josh from Triptides actually helps us out on bass live. But even so, we all wind up playing multiple instruments in most songs.

Austin: All of us play guitar live, but then we have other things we’re doing at the same time.

Cody: Yeah, I’m usually running drum patterns on my Elektribe EM-1, and then we have a few samplers and loop pedals and such to make everything work out.

 

LL: Austin, are there any effects on your vocals, or is your voice just that dark?

Austin: Well, there’s reverb…

Cody: Austin’s voice is definitely dark though.

 

LL: For each of you: Who is your favorite band right now?

Cody: Shwayze.

John: The Donnas.

Austin: Linkin Park.

 

LL: Tell me about your west coast tour. Any dates/venues lined up?

John: Well, there’s no specifics outlined yet, but we think it’s going to be in August. We’ve all got different schedules this summer so it’s going to be a little hectic, but it’ll happen.
