Nashville – When I prepared to go to the Deorro show at Anthem, I was not entirely sure about what I was going to be walking into. I am not typically an EDM fan (EDM, for those of you unfamiliar with the genre, stands for Electronic Dance Music) and so I was not positive I would even enjoy myself. Needless to say, what I encountered was one of the greatest nights of my entire life.
If you have never been to an EDM show, let me prepare you. EDM is not always necessarily about the music when it is performed live. When anyone goes to an EDM concert, it is one hundred percent all about the experience. Of course the music plays an important part, but mostly everyone is too drunk (or possibly high) to really care a whole lot about what is being played. Electronic shows typically start at the ten o’clock hour and go on until roughly two or three in the morning, so if you buy a ticket, be prepared for a hardcore workout – everyone is dancing, and if you aren’t then you’ll be sorely missing out on the point of an EDM show.
Deorro did not even take the stage till about midnight. Until that point, DJs were playing music that no one knew the names of. Not as if it mattered, because the second people get into the venue it is purely about dancing and nothing else. The energy ran high. Despite working an eight hour day and going off of roughly six or seven hours of sleep, I was more than capable of keeping up with the crowd and found myself shocked when the time suddenly went from ten forty-five to two thirty in the morning.
Even if I had no idea what Deorro looked like, I would have known instantly when he took the stage because the power and energy within the crowd suddenly soared when he appeared. Playing original creations (and a couple of samples of well-known songs that had all concert goers singing in one loud, mostly drunken chorus), Deorro provided for all of us a brief escape from caring about anything. His music is so packed of just raw intensity that crashed over us like a tsunami. Even if you did not care for EDM, you would have found yourself moving along with the crowd. Deorro was having just as much fun as the people on the floor. You get the distinct sense that if he was able he would have been right in the middle of the chaos, probably encouraging us all to get a little crazier. This was certainly the craziest show I have ever been to. Even big arena shows do not compare to the mass lawlessness of an EDM concert. Deorro made it so it did not matter that his songs had no lyrics for the most part – people don’t care about singing along. They care about partying and dancing until the sun comes up. He represents a nation of fans that simply want to let loose for a few hours.
Deorro is currently on tour in the United States and Canada, during which his master plan is to obviously bring one of the greatest music and dancing experiences to anyone and everyone.
