Eux Autres, which is pronounced ooz-oh-tra and means, literally “them others,” aren’t French. They’re ‘kind of from Portland’ but call San Francisco home. At the Mississippi Studios last night, Eux Autres were the opening band for Chain Gang of 1974 and Candy Claws. The pop band claims to “write songs with sparse instrumentation,” but to me, they seem well in control of the many instruments on stage. The lead singer, Heather Larimer, stood in front of a keyboard with a xylophone and egg shakers perched precariously on top, picking up a tambourine for most songs and adding hand claps for others. Along with guitarist Nick Larimer (Heather’s brother!), drummer Yoshi Nakamoto and bassist Ethan, Heather leads Eux Autres with sassiness and flair. Every member of Eux Autres is brimming with talent. Nick and Heather sing, Ethan can easily switch from bass to keyboard and Yoshi- well, Yoshi is a monster on drums.

Eux Autres’ set was short, but it didn’t disappoint. Opening with “Ecoutez Bien,” (Listen Well, for all you non-frenchies out there) a song punctuated with “woos” of joy, (video below) the audience at the intimate venue were fully entertained with what I like to call sunshine pop. It just makes you want to dance and/or skip when you hear it. Eux Autres is currently touring the west coast and releasing their next album, Broken Bow next week. Keep an eye/ear out here for a review of the album as well as an interview with Heather Larimer, coming soon.
