Looking at the line outside Chicago’s Subterranean wrap around the block was a great sight to witness as I walked up to the sold out The Wombats show Saturday night. While I waited in line, I had the opportunity to hear a local talk about the significance of the venue. He compared the inside to a small dive bar, if you added a cramped upstairs balcony. Personally, I love watching a show from the balcony, though it’s not the greatest area to take photos from, but it’s great for people watching and the best sound.

Once The Wombats took the stage, the people watching ceased and the ruckus began. One wouldn’t have guessed by the crowds familiarity with the lyrics that this was only the second time the band had played Chicago. They roared with approval as they started their energetic set. Between each song, fans took a break from dancing and jumping to listen to the witty banter from the band. Tonight was the four year anniversary since the outfit released their first album and the mood from the band on down was jovial. While watching the crowd immersed in the band, I couldn’t help but think that this was going to be a night to remember. A gigantic dance party continued throughout the show, especially when the Brits requested concert-goers to jump while they grinded to certain songs. I hadn’t experienced a better show at Subterranean where the crowd was as excited as they were at this gig.

These Scousers are a band that’s a must see when they’re in the States. There are a couple more stateside dates before they continue on to play several more gigs worldwide. If you aren’t lucky enough to catch The Wombats this time around I would certainly continue listening to their music in order to learn the lyrics to belt them out along with the crowd the next time the chance arises.
