Delorean Brings Barcelonan Dance Rock to Soho on 9/1

Last night the Spanish quartet arrived at Soho with a beat in their heads and more than a little pep in their step. Their upbeat indie-dance tunes head everyone on the dance floor cutting loose, including themselves (see keyboardist Unai Lazcano rocking out in the video below). Everyone had a lot to be excited about. Besides the fact that Club Mercy was bringing Delorean to make their first appearance ever in Santa Barbara, the show also featured two great opening acts that it would behoove us to keep an eye on for some good music in the future. Local indie-dance act Gardens and Villa played a dance worthy set for an impressive first appearance at Soho, followed by the Los Angeles based indie rockers Foster the People. The second opener had some very melodic tunes and catchy whistling grooves, especially in their track “Pumped up Kicks.”

It was Delorean, however, that had all the kids waiting in spastic anticipation until they finally came to the stage around 10:30. They had an amazing energy and seemed to be having a great time on stage, which is always a good vibe to send out because fun can be very contagious, and inevitably their good time becomes yours. They played basically the entirety of their new album Subiza, including the warm and fuzzy loops of “Real Love,” and the explosively energetic “Stay Close.” They didn’t interact much with the crowd during their set, playing all of their songs more or less back to back, but their stage presence was more than enough to keep the crowd locked in and leaning on every chorus. Once they were off the stage, however, they were all about mixing it up with the fans. They hung out and drank beers with eager fans who were dying to talk to them about their unique sound and the prospect of a return trip to Santa Barbara. It was truly an awesome experience to see one of Spain’s most up-and-coming dance music acts play to an intimate crowd of less than 300 people, and I would see them again in a heartbeat. Luckily for me, they are playing FYF Fest in two days, so I wont have to wait until their next tour to see the Spanish spectacle again. If you haven’t had a chance to catch Delorean yet, then there has never been a better time to scope them out than this Saturday’s FYF music fest at the Los Angeles State Historic Park. See you there.
