Mixtape #14 – Capital Cities, Lewis Watson, Small Black and more

,

In this past week’s musical news roundup otherwise known as BestNewBands.com Mixtape #14, Capital Cities were our most recent featured artist; an eclectic electronic duo who found their sound by experimenting for their day job of creating music for commercials. One of those experiments includes this very danceable re-make of “Nothing Compares 2 U.” We also reviewed Pony Time’s recent release Go Find Your Own, which Brigit said “creatively synthesizes the punk sensibility of the ‘80s with the more intentional lo-fi of today’s standards.”

English singer/songwriter Lewis Watson covered SBTRKT, and though I’m not too big on the usual singer/songwriter folk fodder, but I have to give Lewis props for doing a bang up job covering SBTRKT, who he is apparently a big fan of. Good taste, good cover. (Photo by Josh Skinner).

Small Black’s “Free at Dawn” was instantly my new jam. They announced the release of their new album, Limits of Desire, slated for May 14, and Spring really can’t come soon enough for a few reasons. I need more Small Black and vitamin D, stat.

The Black Angels have a new track called “Evil Things.” (bnb.com breaking news link) This was breaking news on our site and it was magic to my ears in my head.

Still Corners have released their lead single off the forthcoming Strange Pleasures full length, and it’s way more of a synth-pop track than I would expect, but it’s still got that ethereal, mysterious shoegaze thing going on that Still Corners are so good at.

Brooklyn fuzz-rockers Lightouts remind of 90s late night slow burning rock jams in the best way. They were named one of SPIN’s 2012 CMJ “Next Big Things,” and this week they release their debut album Want. Just after having a listen to the title track, I could have more of this.

White Prism used to be Johanna and the Dusty Floor, but their sound has changed quite drastically, and now so has their name in reflection. It’s more electro pop, more atmospheric, and more like Johanna has been listening to heaps of Depeche Mode lately.

El Perro Del Mar has unveiled a video for “I Was A Boy,” a track that was inspired by her own tomboy childhood. After growing up a little, she shares that “Falling in love reminded me of the feeling of being undefined by anyone as anything. Of just being. Of feeling. Of being loved.””

Midnight Spin unveiled a new track off their debut Don’t Let Me Sleep, which they’ve just embarked on a six-week nationwide tour in support of. It’s called “Conchis Bliss,” and it’s somehow blissful and rockin at the same time.

Rush Midnight had me at “Rush Midnight’s +1 EP was one of the steamiest releases on Cascine, a sexy urban affair that celebrated youth and living for the moment.”

And I had to throw Starred on the mix, because Courtney Love proclaimed they’re her favorite band in NYC, and there’s just something about fuzzed-out trashy apathetic tunes that I love to curl my lip to.
