Preview: Austra, Young Galaxy and Tasseomancy at the Empty Bottle in Chicago

Austra425

Canadians invade the Empty Bottle on Monday (11/28).

Headliner Austra is a Toronto-based band consisting of former members of Galaxy and Spiral Beach. Lead vocalist and chief songwriter Katie Stelmanis seizes crowds with her mystique and beckoning arm movements, while inviting everyone to join her and feel their songs. The music is electronic, fused with Stelmanis’ powerful and far-reaching vocals and influenced by everyone from Nina Simone to NIN, by way of Giorgio Moroder and Bjork. The band recently signed with Domino Records and released the Feel It Break LP this summer.

Young_Galaxy

Young Galaxy is a Canadian quintet whose latest album Shapeshifting (reviewed here) sums up the group’s tumultuous transition from record label to independent music makers. The band, who toured Europe in October and have gigged with ARCADE FIRE, STARS and TWIN SHADOW, broke new ground on this album, writing songs without verses and choruses and letting “the space be as important to the songs as the sounds we put in there.”

Tasseomancy is a continuation of neo-folk duo Ghost Bee. Sisters Sari and Romy Lightman have just released their second LP “Ulalume”.

Doors are at 9:30pm, $12 to get in, 21+.
