Tomorrow night (Tuesday, April 5) is a show I really wish I was going to. At 9pm Weekend opens for Wire at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, NY. Weekend has been on heavy rotation in my iTunes for the past few weeks. They’re doing what a lot of other bands are doing right now, but in my opinion they’re doing it better. The song “Coma Summer” in particular really reminds me of My Bloody Valentine with the distorted off-key sounding guitar drones, but there are also distinct punk influences, and it also reminds me of a guitar riff in a new wave song that I can’t quite put my finger on. It’s the kind of music that you can just get lost and drown in if you want to, but if you want to seriously listen and analyze the technicalities, it’s actually just as interesting. I’m really bummed that I’ll be missing this show, but I received an invitation to a special performance at Bowery Electric happening that night that I really can’t pass up.

If you haven’t heard London-based Wire, you’ve probably at least heard Fischerspooner’s cover of their song “The 15th” played at a club somewhere. This band has been around since 1976, so they’ve got cred stemming from the height of the UK punk movement and are still making music that is their own brand of stark industrial punk sounds with an emphasis on lyricism. They released another album the end of last year called Red Barked Tree that is available on their website.
Doors are at 8pm, show at 9pm. Tickets are still available, and are $20 in advance and at the door.
