Alternative pop goddess Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine is finally back in action with a killer new track, “What the Water Gave Me.” This track is the first single from her upcoming second album, which has yet to be titled and is set to be released this November. The new album will follow up her 2009 debut, Lungs, which immediately left listeners gasping for more. So, after a solid two year wait, fans will be excited to get more of Florence + the Machine’s dizzying, ethereal, fun, powerful and inspiring sound.
This single lacks none of the above adjectives, either. This track brings a sense of darkness and aggression (including references to tragic heroines Frida Kahlo and Virginia Woolf) that Lungs spun off more playfully (“Kiss With a Fist”). It begins in that subtle, beautifully eerie tone that, to me, is a great Florence + the Machine signature, and from there, it escalates to a loudness that actually competes with Welch’s booming, wailing vocals. It’s a disorienting blend of chaos and harmony, and it takes a few listens before you realize how totally awesome it is. Check out the video below.
