Just when you thought the renaissance of indie music in 2010 couldn’t get any better, Austin-based Ghostland Observatory dazzles again with the release of their fourth album, Codename: Rondo. The band’s sound, which has been called the odd the blend of Rage Against The Machine and Spice Girls, once again is an up-tempo blend of electro-pop that is sure to keep heads bobbing and hips shaking.

What began as a collaboration between front man/guitarist Aaron Behrens and drummer/keyboardist Thomas Ross Turner in 2005, the duo has been bringing innovative songs and energetic live performances across the world. They release all of their albums on Turner’s Trashy Moped Records, which enables for the duo to retain the creative control necessary in order for them experiment with sound.

With regard to innovation, Codename is no different from the band’s earlier work. The album was recorded in what Turner called a more linear approach, using fewer sounds while at the same time, making everyone count. The result: part-psychedelica, a splash of electronica with sprinkles of rock, funk and soul. Usually, when a group attempts to make things too complicated, it could be a mess, but not here.

Thankfully, the Texas outfit doesn’t the mundane elements that bogs down their contemporaries and continue to make excellent, innovative music. Currently on tour until the end of December, Ghostland Observatory’s new album is a must have and their live show is one that shouldn’t be missed.
