Berlin – With the release of their self-titled debut LP this week, Fold is laying down a gauntlet of musical influences that encompasses elements of funk, jazz, hip hop, and alternative rock across ten reflective tracks. Live instrumentation is another layer to this Leeds band that listeners will appreciate, as the band throws the entire cornucopia of sound into the mix, from vibraphone to flute, nylon string guitar to funky horn riffs. Without a doubt, there are few musical acts on the scene that tackle as many weighty subjects convincingly throughout an album.
How many bands can you name that quote Lena Horne, Vonnegut, Jimmy Carter, and Bruce Lee? Enter engaging, thought-provoking lyrical content. Enter (the) Fold.
Band members Seth Mowshowitz (vox, keyboards, guitar), Kane Rattray (drums), Ben Walsh (bass), and Josh Gardziel (guitar) are a quartet ushering forth a new sound en masse to an already eagerly excited fan base, all set to increase more than a few levels with the self-release of their first LP. Fold has been steadily generating interest for their debut this year with the release of the tracks ‘She’, and ‘A Victim’s Mentality’, both of which have garnered critical acclaim.
Fold maintains the musical integrity throughout the entirety of the LP, using only live instrumentation for a raw and more emotional pull. With most artists these days relying heavily on digital production over a more organic approach, this direction serves the band well with their brand of music that covers world issues and the politics of corruption. What makes Fold stand apart from similar bands is their messages are delivered in such a way that is not only entertainment, but it is edu-tainment. Standout tracks on the LP include the jazzy-frenetic A Victim’s Mentality, which veers slightly to the dark side, to the break-beat dance-y Detroit Red, and the smooth lounge tones of Mr. President, We’re in Trouble. For those looking for a band that goes against the grain and plays outside the box, Fold has something for everyone on this album, as they merge electronica beats over soul, jazz, and hip hop on other tracks that deliver. Other notable songs on the album include ‘She’, ‘A Reflection of Us All’, and ‘Two Past Midnight’. Featuring lyrics that prove that there can be a sermon in the sound that doesn’t necessarily have to be preachy, what Fold fully shows on this debut is the ability of their music to deliver a passionate message about the human condition across ambitious musical arrangements. With live shows that have been noted for visuals that connect with audiences, Fold delivers on a sound that is atypical from cookie-cutter, mainstream music currently dominating airwaves.
Two of their tracks that can be heard now include ‘She’ on BandCamp and the video to the catchy ‘Be Water My Friend’ now on YouTube.
In support of their new release, Fold is embarking on a short tour throughout the United Kingdom. To stay up to date on the latest Fold news, follow them via their social media links below:
