My mailbox has been bombarded with CD’s lately (and yes, I take the time to listen to all of them) and yesterday, I received a CD I’ve been anxiously waiting to listen to- Stateless’ latest edition to the music world, “Matilda.” With a history of amazing songs like “Bloodstream” I had high expectations for their Sophomore studio album, and safe to say, the U.K. based band did not disappoint.
Wading my way from track to track I listened to the proclaimed single “Ariel” and while I expected something ambient and Radiohead-esque along the same lines as “Bloodstream” I was pleasantly surprised by the Mediterranean fusion found within the song. While the album as a whole still celebrates its roots as an ambient based band, there are a lot more electro elements involved in each track (remember Linkin Park’s Hybrid Theory/Reanimation era? Keep that in mind when streaming “Assasins”) adding just another layer to the exquisitely crafted tracks’ intrigue.
With poetic lyrics and lullaby style songs that could come from a wayward Tim Burton flick the next notable track on “Matilda” is “I’m on fire,” with it’s soothing sound albeit a bit dark in nature.
Determined to rip the newly lulled listener back from a state of pseudo slumber Stateless immediately regains their undivided attention with their “Ballad of NGB” and true to their onion like song style the track is layered with soft underlying electro elements slowly leading up to what seems like an eminent crescendo of violins that never quite finishes, leaving the listener unfulfilled but waiting for more as the next track is eagerly ushered in for your auditory enjoyment.
Contemporary electronics alongside classical violins is a welcomed union for Stateless’ “Matilda” and though I was initially thrown by the unexpected surprise, the shock was a sweet one, and the eleven tracks are as disarming as they are charming. Overall, I enjoyed “Matilda” in its entirety and I’ll be spending a lot of time with the girl. With just one question left unanswered (is “miles to go” Robert Frost inspired?- my inner Lit major needs to know) the rest have all been delicately put to sleep, thanks to eleven tracks compiling my new favorite wayward electro lullaby. You can grab the single “Ariel” which is out now, and the CD is set to drop soon- so stay tuned to www.myspace.com/statelessonline for more info! I’d say thank you and goodnight- but I have miles to go before I sleep.
