In New York, it’s when you’re riding the train. Chicago, traipsing home on a still, frostbitten, snowy, late night. L.A., watching the sun spill diamonds into the ocean. On vacation, whirling about on a shopping spree fueled by mid-morning mimosas. At one point or another, you believe someone is making a music video out of your life. Tony Castles‘ No Service is the soundtrack.
The debut EP from the Brooklyn band (we know), who are managed by Das Racist’s Himanshu Suri (WE KNOW), is a shimmery five-song fairy tale, one that sounds like it would be played at a VICE Magazine party. And although we doubt we’re cool enough to have our lives set to their self-described “gauzy dream pop,” we couldn’t avert the first song’s dizzying drive from crashing spectacularly into our fantasies.
And crash it does—singer Paul Sicilian has punk blood running through his veins, evidenced by the quick flip his tenor takes from mellifluous to maniacal in “Dream Job.”
But the beauty of the trio is how comfortably it straddles that divide of pop and punk. We know, we know, it’s been done before. Yet maybe they only gave us this tiny taste to pique our curiosity of where they’ll go next. You know, like a music video.
