Concert Preview: Theophilus London at Key Club Thursday

Some of us (ahem) are on a never-ending quest for a song that makes us feel like we might’ve fallen through a portal and landed in Downtown Manhattan circa 1983, when Madonna was sexy and looked like she probably smelled. Theophilus London’s “TNT,” from 2009’s This Charming Mixtape, did precisely that—so convincingly so that it was a surprise to glance down and not see electric neon capris glaring up from underneath a flouncy lace tutu.

Throwback intended. London, a rapper, writer, and producer from Brooklyn, is a member of an artistic subset who views genres as the colors of a rainbow—more beautiful when each is blurring into the next. His latest EP, Lovers Holiday, plays in pastures with no boundaries: Its bookends are “Why Even Try,” a Prince-kissed John Hughes soundtrack single, and “Flying Overseas,” a futuristic ballad.

Like Steve Liriks told BestNewBands.com’s Laurel Kathleen last fall, “I like the fact that Theophilus London does whatever he wants and always thinks outside of the box.” You’ll find us going back to the future with him Thursday night.

Tickets are $15-$45.00, the show is 18 and over, and doors open at 8PM. To buy, visit Key Club here.
