Evan Voytas is really rocking the music scene here in Los Angeles- breaking genre boundaries and consistently surprising listeners with his unique brand of Electropop! The extremely busy Voytas seems to be always on-the-go, and in addition to his residency Monday nights at the Echo, he’s gearing up for some CMJ shows!
In the midst of all the chaos, collaborations, performances, and normal nonsense Evan took a couple minutes to give us the inside scoop on what’s up next for the artist in twenty-eleven, CMJ, and his fave guilty pleasure songs!
BNB: Main musical inspiration behind your electropop?
EV: I think when I started writing music like this, I was listening to the first Ratatat album and the Phoenix album “Alphabetical.”
BNB: We’re gearing up for CMJ!
EV: Any pre-show vices or rituals? I just try to act cool, relax.
BNB: What would you do for a klondike bar?
EV: I don’t have that kind of relationship with a klondike bar.
BNB: Fave guilty pleasure song to rock out to?
EV: Maybe “Touch My Body” by Mariah Carey. I’m not embarrassed that I like that song, but I recently saw the video and that shit’s awful.
BNB: If you could collaborate with any other musical artist- who would it be?
EV: R Kelly, Rihanna, I don’t care, whoever.
BNB: When did you break into the L.A. music scene?
EV: For whatever reason, I’ve fallen into the hip-hop scene here, playing with dudes like Blu, Mainframe, Gonjasufi, and Flying Lotus. I feel more aligned to their musical sensibilities than any sort of rock n’ roll that’s happening out here right now.
BNB: When will your next CD drop? Any promo tours scheduled aside from CMJ?
EV: I have a new EP coming out on Cascine October 18th digitally and on vinyl in November. I’m also playing every Monday this month at the Echo.
BNB: First CD you purchased without the aid of a parental piggy bank?
EV: I tried to buy the double CD of Billy Joel’s greatest hits and Doggystyle at the same time, but they made me put Doggystyle back.
BNB: What’s up next for you going into 2011?
EV: A full-length release and more touring.
The unique thing about Evan is the broad spectrum his music covers- and the wide range of styles his music encompasses. It was immediate lust at first listen when a good friend clued me into “Getting Higher,” and after branching out and listening to his other tracks and tunes, I immediately termed his music “happy feet” music- because it’s an immediate endorphin inducing mood lifter.
From the experimental “I have a dream in my heart” to the jazzier and more low-key “I took a trip on a plane” no matter what you’re mood Voytas most certainly has a song fitting for every emoticon offered by in this cyber savvy age. Just try and hold still during the video below. I dare you.
Lucky for us, Evan doesn’t plan on slowing down anytime soon, and you can catch him at the Echo (sans an admission fee I might add!) every Monday night in October! In addition to the West coast dates he’ll be rocking several CMJ shows, including Cantora Records’ showcase at Bowery Electric (along with Superhumanoids and Bear Hands)!
