Things get pretty hectic at all day festivals. There are lines, crowds, people fighting tooth and nail to get to the stage for the bands they came to see. Now add those ideas to the Sunset Strip- you’ve got traffic, police directing it, the hustle and bustle of fans and bands, etc. Heading back to the Viper Room (aka press home base) for a little R&R (who the hell am I kidding) we spotted Neon Trees (Tyler Glenn, Elaine Bradley, Chris Allen, Branden Campbell) crossing to get back onto the closed off set of strip designated for performances. Now it takes a lot to get my cardio up but I was doing a 180 faster than your prom date to get to the boys and find out for a quick sec about their current tour, etc. They were nice enough to let bestnewbands.com tag along for the ride so I sat down, shut up, and listened to what they had to say!
BNB: You guys are playing in a bit- are you stoked to be playing this particular show?
NT: Yeah I mean, it’s Sunset Strip, we’re happy to be here!
BNB: How has being on the radio heavy rotation list, as well as featured on a commercial changed things for you?
NT: It’s given us more opportunities to do what we love doing- but I wouldn’t say we’ve changed. Things have changed.
BNB: Fair enough!
BNB: You’ve been, and are currently, on tour with 30 Seconds To Mars. How’s that going?
NT: You know- it’s great! We weren’t sure how people would react at first- but it’s been great. Definitely an experience.
BNB: Pre show vices or rituals?
NT: Besides interviews?
BNB: That’s not a vice- that’s an experience!
NT: Hmm…I’d say no- mostly just keeping up with the latest music and getting excited for the next show.
BNB: Alright I know you’re rushing off to set up at the venue- closing remarks?
NT: Thanks, and we’ll be continuing to tour- so check us out!
Neon Trees rushed off into the crowd of people swarming the strip, their down to earth vibe still ringing in my ears. The thing that really gets me about these dudes is the first time I saw them, which was by accident, at the Greek Theater opening for 30 Seconds To Mars, and though they consider themselves strictly “alternative” I couldn’t help but be struck by the pop-rock vibe! Think a little Vampire Weekend with a side of darker rock.
You may “want some more” so come on people “what are you waiting for” they’re literally begging you to “take a bite of (their) heart tonight”- well, Neon Trees, you don’t have to ask us twice. Once bitten, twice shy? Not at all. You can find out where to take a bite of their hearts next at www.myspace.com/neontrees!
