Falling in Love with The Fling

Who ever would have a thought that a fling could be more than just, well, a fling?  Sadly such is not the case in actual relationships.  But fortunately enough for all of us, it is the case in terms of music. And by that I mean The Fling, a foursome from Long Beach, CA.  Yesterday, I had the delight of seeing some of the band’s performance while at the Summer and Music Festival held in downtown Long Beach.  As the Queen Mary serenely sat afloat on the water behind them, Dustin (vocals, guitar) and Graham (bass, vocals) Lovelis, Justin Ivey (drums, vocals) and Justin Roeland (guitar, vocals) played for a diverse crowd of characters.  From those hipsters we all know and love (/hate), families and crazy kooks rapping to themselves while riding bikes, all seemed to greatly enjoy the performance that unraveled before their eyes.

And I was right there with them.  Enjoying every minute of what I was hearing yet wondering in the back of my mind where they came up with that name.  My question was answered by way of Dustin- “Its cool. The Fling was the name of my [and Graham’s] dad’s band when he was our age.  We just continued the tradition.”

It seems tradition keeps the family close in more aspects than just holidays.  In addition to this question Dustin answered quite a few more for me in our conversation on the pier.  There’s nothing like the ocean breeze and setting sun to create the perfect atmosphere for musical bonding.
