After the Hard Hiccup a few weeks back, its time for the folks running that ship to make it up to electronic music fans. The lineup this time around is awesome, with Soulwax and Crystal Castles alone making it worth the ticket price. I’ve seen Crystal Castles live before they released their second self titled album, but the change in direction with that album should make this a whole different animal. Soulwax are just legends, and everyone that saw their set at Coachella this year as 2 Many DJ’s knows that they make the music that makes you dance.

Ariel Pink is a master of what he does, but putting your finger on exactly what he does can be tricky. He has recorded a lot of stuff in lo-fi, but his latest album Before Today sounds completely different and certainly has more mass appeal. The new album sounds fresh and new, yet somehow also old and nostalgic at the same time. Whatever it is, it sounds great, and I’ve had this song stuck in my head for weeks:

So for those of you ready willing and able to flock to Grant Park in Chicago, I highly recommend a little three day festival called Lollapalooza! Not only are there bands to quench any musical genre’s thirst- it is one hell of a rocking great time with a myriad of musical options! Tickets are available HERE, with one day passes going for $90, and, if you care to triple your fun, three day passes going for $215! There’s no age limit on this one, so accessorize with a partner in crime and get to rocking!
I spoke to drummer Grady Don Sandlin about their recent success at the Dallas Observer Music Awards, and he gave me some very interesting insights into the dynamic duo’s relationship. RTB2 took home Best Group and Best Blues Act at this year’s DOMAs, and guitar player Ryan Thomas Becker won for Best Instrumentalist. I was curious as to the kind of pressure that would put on the group for their subsequent performances:
Grady: The only pressure is professional. We don’t want to be worried about the local music awards next year. We play with the same intensity at every show, and we never want be caught ‘mailing it in’. We always like to play to fit our environment; I like to feel like I am playing to a full room, no matter the size. That can be more difficult in larger rooms…

On rehearsing and fresh content:
It is not uncommon for us to take a new song to the stage having not actually played it together at all. We don’t rehearse very much at all. maybe a couple times a year. Usually Ryan brings an idea and shows it to me on the guitar or on a recording and we shape the parts and dynamics live. The songs are always changing as a result- I guess it keeps us from getting sick of them.
The Red 100′s are relatively green to the Dallas music scene, but you wouldn’t know it by the way that they play. They usually take the stage in a storm of psychedelic lights and guitar shredding, their sound a mix of 60′s and 70′s blues and pure rock.
The Effinays are quickly becoming the Dallas party band, playing reggae grooves with an underlying funk and jam-band vibe. They are an instrumental band with so much personality that it’s hard not to feel like you’ve gotten to know each of the players by the end of the show.
Orange Peel Sunshine puts a gritty grunge bottom under their often airy indie lyrics. There’s something about this group that sounds post-apocalyptic: I don’t know if it’s their 90′s-inspired devil-may-care delivery or low-fi melancholia, but whatever it is I like it.
