Where: Los Angeles Historic Park in Los Angeles, CA

When: Saturday, August 7 from 12 PM-Midnight

Age Restrictions: N/A, All Ages

After the Hard Hiccup a few weeks back, its time for the folks running that ship to make it up to electronic music fans. The lineup this time around is awesome, with Soulwax and Crystal Castles alone making it worth the ticket price. I’ve seen Crystal Castles live before they released their second self titled album, but the change in direction with that album should make this a whole different animal. Soulwax are just legends, and everyone that saw their set at Coachella this year as 2 Many DJ’s knows that they make the music that makes you dance.

APHG

Who: Ariel’s Pink Haunted Graffiti with an opening act by Pearl Harbor

Where: Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa, CA

When: Saturday, August 7 at 8 PM

Cost: $10 Advance, click HERE for ticket purchase

Age Restrictions: 21+

Ariel Pink is a master of what he does, but putting your finger on exactly what he does can be tricky. He has recorded a lot of stuff in lo-fi, but his latest album Before Today sounds completely different and certainly has more mass appeal. The new album sounds fresh and new, yet somehow also old and nostalgic at the same time. Whatever it is, it sounds great, and I’ve had this song stuck in my head for weeks:

So for those of you ready willing and able to flock to Grant Park in Chicago, I highly recommend a little three day festival called Lollapalooza!  Not only are there bands to quench any musical genre’s thirst- it is one hell of a rocking great time with a myriad of musical options!  Tickets are available HERE, with one day passes going for $90, and, if you care to triple your fun, three day passes going for $215!  There’s no age limit on this one, so accessorize with a partner in crime and get to rocking!

For those of the west-coast-is-the-best-coast persuasion, White Arrows will be showcasing at Spaceland in Silverlake, California on Monday, August 2, 2010!  They are a trip and half, and the show is completely sans an entrance fee.  Great tunes, zero monetary expense requirement- need I say more?  They’ll rush the stage at 10:30 sharp- be there, or be square!  Be forewarned, the night’s rating will be a little above the PG zone- so those under 21 are out of luck this time.  You can check out their trippy tunes at www.myspace.com/whitearrows- hope to see you all there!

JoannaNewsom
Picked by: Kelly Montgomery
Where: Aladdin Theatre in Portland, OR
When: Friday, August 6 and Saturday, August 7 at 8 PM both days
Cost: $23.50
Age Restrictions: Minors accompanied by parent or guardian.

Portlanders are sure to be wowed by this combination of indie-folk superstars at The Aladdin Theatre this weekend. Joanna Newsom’s most recent album, “Have One On Me” is a delicately-crafted masterpiece of her unique, woodland-fairy-like sound. Newsom is a classically-trained harpist with a polarizing (but in my opinion, lovely) voice and a knack for elaborate storytelling. Robin Pecknold, leader of Seattle’s Fleet Foxes, has been winning indie fans over for the past few years with his timeless voice and unquestionable talent. This gem of a singer-songwriter, sometimes known as White Antelope, always seems at home on stage and will surely be a treat to see solo.

mewithoutyou

Picked by: Cervante Pope
Where: Bottom Lounge in Chicago, IL
When: Tuesday, August 3 at 8:30 PM
Cost: $17.50
Age Restrictions: 18+

MeWithoutYou has got some miles on them, music wise. And when I first gave them a listen back in high school, it took a while for them to grow me.  Thank goodness they did.  This show will be a throwback to classic angsty heartfelt music executed with lyrics delivered like conversation and instrumentation that feeds the part of you that just wants to shout sometimes. mewithoutYou is a band that I couldn’t go without.

Picked by: Laurel Johnston
Where: Good Records in Dallas, TX
When: Friday, August 6

This Friday’s showbill at Good Records in Dallas reads like a veritable who’s who of up and comers in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. RTB2 is the headlining band, a Dallas-based blues/indie/rock duo quickly becoming a household name in the DFW area.
I spoke to drummer Grady Don Sandlin about their recent success at the Dallas Observer Music Awards, and he gave me some very interesting insights into the dynamic duo’s relationship. RTB2 took home Best Group and Best Blues Act at this year’s DOMAs, and guitar player Ryan Thomas Becker won for Best Instrumentalist. I was curious as to the kind of pressure that would put on the group for their subsequent performances:
Grady: The only pressure is professional. We don’t want to be worried about the local music awards next year. We play with the same intensity at every show, and we never want be caught ‘mailing it in’. We always like to play to fit our environment; I like to feel like I am playing to a full room, no matter the size. That can be more difficult in larger rooms…

RTB2

On rehearsing and fresh content:
It is not uncommon for us to take a new song to the stage having not actually played it together at all.
We don’t rehearse very much at all. maybe a couple times a year. Usually Ryan brings an idea and shows it to me on the guitar or on a recording and we shape the parts and dynamics live. The songs are always changing as a result- I guess it keeps us from getting sick of them.

The Red 100′s are relatively green to the Dallas music scene, but you wouldn’t know it by the way that they play. They usually take the stage in a storm of psychedelic lights and guitar shredding, their sound a mix of 60′s and 70′s blues and pure rock.
The Effinays are quickly becoming
the Dallas party band, playing reggae grooves with an underlying funk and jam-band vibe. They are an instrumental band with so much personality that it’s hard not to feel like you’ve gotten to know each of the players by the end of the show.
Orange Peel Sunshine puts a gritty grunge bottom under their often airy indie lyrics. There’s something about this group that sounds post-apocalyptic: I don’t know if it’s their 90′s-inspired devil-may-care delivery or low-fi melancholia, but whatever it is I like it.

The Effinays

The show begins at 7pm on Friday, August 6th, and tickets are FREE with a free keg available to patrons. Good Records is located at 1808 Lower Greenville Ave in Dallas. For more information on the venue, visit www.goodrecords.com. For more information on the bands, visit their websites here:
