Voxhaul Broadcast is consistently rocking audiences in Southern California, and with the pending release of their debut C.D. “Timing Is Everything,” we’re in for several sweet surprises.
The band heavily influenced by 60s rock and a little grunge is a breath of fresh air, hitting the music scene with more strength than a dangerously strong Altoid. The Zombies/ Jeremy Messersmith hybrid quartet is an unexpected sound that strangely works. My self-proclaimed favorite track “How’d You Get My Number” seems like a strange track to be played on bills alongside the popular pop rock group Saint Motel- as the energies are slightly different- but the two sounds work, and of course as all L.A. kids know- anything goes here in Los Scandalous.
I caught up with the four boys to chat about their upcoming release and what’s up next for Voxhaul in twenty-eleven.
BNB: How’d you decide on that name?
VB: When we were thinking of band names we wrote up a huge list of different names to choose from. We finally picked out a name Foxhole Broadcast and went to a bar to celebrate. We have a friend that has a very thick Scottish accent so when he repeated our name back to us it sounded like he said Voxhaul instead of Foxhole. We all decided that we like Voxhaul Broadcast better then Foxhole Broadcast so we stuck with it.
BNB: How’d you meet, Craigslist, PennySaver?
VB: We are all childhood friends from the same town so we found each other pretty easily. We were the only grungy punks in a town full of surfers.
BNB: You play Spaceland quite often- is that your fave L.A. venue or is there another?
VB: Spaceland is definitely one of the best places in LA. We all really enjoy the venues that are in Echo Park and Silver Lake a lot.
BNB: Any pre-show vices or rituals?
VB: Nothing too crazy we just make sure to have a couple of drinks in us to calm any nerves we might have. It usually works.
BNB: What would you do for a Klondike bar?
VB: I suppose I would do a Voxhaul Broadcast interview and in return I would hope to get a Klondike Bar.
BNB: I’ll have it Fed-Ex’d this afternoon boys.
BNB: Craziest tour/ show stories to date?
VB: One time we were driving through Northern California in a blizzard and we didn’t have chains for our tires. The cops, or whatever they were, made us pull off to the side of the road and to our surprise all the motels in the area were all booked up so we had to sleep in our van. It was like sleeping in a freezer it was so cold.
BNB: What other up and coming L.A. bands are you watching right now- aside from yourselves.
VB: We all really enjoy Eastern Conference Champions, The Black Apples and The Union Line who are from Orange County but we like them none the less.
BNB: Is this what you all wanted to be when you grew up? In the event you consider yourself not grown-up, what would you like to be?
VB: Yes, this is exactly what we all have wanted to do ever since we started playing in punk bands when we were younger. If I wasn’t in a band I would probably sell men’s suits. I feel like I could be pretty good at that.
BNB: Groupies or band-aids?
VB: We have fans that are females does that count?
BNB: Note to reader: VB is very P.C.
BNB: What’s up next for VB in twenty-eleven?
VB: Release the Album “Timing Is Everything” and tour tour tour.
BNB: Any spooktacular Halloween costumes you’ve got going on this year?
VB: I usually make my costume out of cardboard at the very last minute but last year we were all Ghost Busters I’m not sure what’s in store for this year’s Halloween.
BNB: Main musical inspirations as a band- specifically for this new CD?
VB: 60′s rock has always been a huge influence on our sound. Anything like Led Zeppelin, The Kinks, Cream and The Beach Boys are huge favorites in the group.
BNB: Closing remarks to friends, fans, & music fiends?
VB: Thanks for all the support and we all are so grateful.
You can catch VB next this Friday at the Avalon (October 22, 2010) to celebrate L.A. fashion week- but the shows NOT to be missed are their November 3 performance at Spaceland, and November 7 show at Gibson Amphitheatre alongside Massive Attack, Thievery Corporation, and Saint Motel- talk about one hell of a line up!
