This past Tuesday, October 19th, Broken Social Scene played to a full house at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles. As I entered the theater, I could feel the anticipation brewing in the air. I’ve been waiting to see Broken Social Scene since I was a sophomore in high school, so excitement was essentially oozing from my veins.
The opening band was the Sea and Cake, a group that originated in the early 90′s in Chicago. They played a very mellow set, with most of the songs coming off of their latest album Car Alarm, which was released in 2008. “Ariel” and the album’s self titled track were among the songs electrified from their stage instruments. Their performance set the scene for the way the rest of the night was going to continue on.
After about a 20 minute intermission the theater lights dimmed, and one by one Broken Social Scene members crept their way onto the stage. At times the band has included up to 20 members, only 7 of which were present for this show. The crowd ecstatically greeted them with open ears, not so patiently awaiting their opening song. They began with “KC Accidental,” a thick textured culmination of loud clashing cymbals, blasting bass drum and a repeated guitar riff that will niche itself in your head. The perfect opener, KC left us amped and wanting more.
Next was “Texico Bitches,” gifted to us by way of their new album Forgiveness Rock Record. “Texico Bitches” is the perfect definitive track for the name of the record granted its more rock based than the indie psychedelic pop they normally deliver. The song was still well received, though the excitement did slightly simmer from what it was when “KC Accidental” was playing. I could tell I was among diehard BSS fans who have been down with them since their first release Feel Good Lost based on the crowd’s reaction.
“Lover’s Spit,” “Almost Crimes” and my personal favorite “Hotel” were all on the set list that night. I jumped out of my seat and didn’t sit back down until the drive home. I tried to get good video of the performance but my dancing and singing prevented that from happening. The few drinks I had only intensified my surroundings and the same goes for others in the audience. With vodka drinks being flung, blunts being passed and my dueting most of the songs with the girl next to me, our Broken Social Scene trip was an affair to remember. They played an hour long set and even returned for an encore. It was the best hour of my life. The band vibed off the crowd’s aura and we vibed right back, belting out every word to every lyric of every song. A collective connection was shared with everyone in the room.
The North American leg of their tour is almost over, ending with a show on the 23rd in Mexico City. They’re headed overseas for dates in Spain, Portugal and the UK to name a few. If given the chance try and catch them next time they’re around. Disappointment will be the furthest from you thoughts!
