The Viper Room in Los Angeles was complete insanity last night when kids suffering from the inevitable quarter-to-midlife crisis’ and everything in between came to rock, roll, and stick it to the man at the famous Sunset Strip locale. I mean, of course, Dirty Penny.
Granted the fiendish foursome (comprised of Binge Daniels on vocals, Jonny Prynce on guitar, Tyno Vincent on bass, and Spanky Savage on drums) may take longer to get ready than any chic California chick- but the boys didn’t hesitate to go from pretty to punk in no time.
The set list had girls, groupies, and guys mouthing every word and rocking out with general disregard for anyone and everyone else in sight- and the throwback song style was more than welcome! The que sera sera screw you attitude was most potent when the boys insisted on serenading the now back in black crowd with a sweet little song dedicated to the “crazy bitch” that tried to kill them not once, twice, but a fourth fatal time by side-swiping the van encasing the crazy kids in carnal couture.
The musically masochistic were enthralled by Dirty Penny’s “Black and Blue,” and the crowd now suffering from the euphoric and unavoidably potent adrenaline high threw caution to the wind and seized the moment, and the makeshift dance floor.
Dirty Penny is good, unclean fun taking cue from former forefathers of glam rock Cinderella, Motley Crue, and Slash in a crazy contemporary way. Music enthusiasts looking to let loose in the middle of the Monday to Friday mundane found that their prayers were answered by the 80s style insanity.
Their “LCS” mantra though repeated throughout the night made it all the more evident that the boys didn’t exactly have to “lie, cheat, and steal on their way to the top”- they were allotted that position by rock-addicted fans and fiends alike!
Last night’s show kicked off their cross-country tour that will eventually lead them over the Atlantic for Eurotrip twenty-ten. Next up is New Mexico- check out www.myspace.com/dirtypennsucks to find out when you can stick it to the man and leave hearing-impaired and all the more happy.
Ending the show in good form, their plea to “come drink with us!” was well-received and widely accepted. No doubt the rest of the night entailed lots of love, lust, drinks, debauchery, and an endless array of bad decisions. Cheers to a new addiction- these boys let L.A. know they are clearly “hear” to stay.
