Freelance Whales Make the Detroit Bar Bounce

Last night, Freelance Whales played for all the wide-eyed locals at Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa. Opening for them were Miniature Tigers with a little help from The New Limb, an up-and-coming band from the Detroit Bar’s home. The artificial smoked filled air combined with the mesmorizing lights created the perfect underground indie atmosphere for those who came to get a good vibe off the music.

The massive excitement started once Miniature Tigers started playing. I had never heard the band before, but I definitely do approve. They were even kind enough to have one of their biggest fans come up on stage and play drums for some of the songs. Charlie (lead vox) and Rick (vox and keys) had stage antics that made the band’s presence much more worthy of credit besides just being an opening act. Once their set was done, the crowd shifted outside to calm some of that excitement by way of cigarettes.

The buildup that The New Limb and Miniature Tigers caused was finally released once Freelance Whales took the stage. The Brooklyn based band had never played here before, so the thrill of being in a new place made the show even better. Freelance played almost all of the songs off Weathervanes, with “Location,” “The Great Estates” and “Hannah” being some of the crowd favorites. The fact that all the band members know how to play all the instruments used aided in keeping the performance exciting. They all kept switching instruments and each song focused on a different member in the forefront. Though dizzying at first, it gave me a new appreciation for what they do.

Overall, I’d say it was a good show. All of the outside effects were merely the icing on a delicious musical cake. Miniature Tigers will be finishing the rest of the tour with Freelance Whales. Tour dates, times and venues can be found at Freelance’s website. I recommend seeing all three bands live. They do what they can to ensure the crowd stays entertained and that is worth the $12 ticket.
