Paschal Coeur’s Last Show Has Heart

I didn’t know too much about Paschal Coeur before I saw them play at The Woods last night. I knew their genre classification was all over the map, from country to electronic to pop. I knew that last night was the last show they would play before disbanding and becoming the Don’t Say Nos (new band, similar lineup).

I didn’t know that I would be touched by their obviously adoring fan base and lead singer/guitarist Danielle Fish’s connection with them. I didn’t know how surprised I would be by their incredibly varied sound and catchy lyrics. And I didn’t know that one band could produce so many different elements in one song.

Paschal Coeur played their favorites from their entire catalog of music, in a “bizarre-shuffle” order. Check out the video below to watch them play “Assuming You Still Don’t Mind Reading My Lyrics,” from their self-titled EP. Its sultry opening quickly bursts into a rollicking beat, whose catchy chorus warily asks “where have all my white T-shirts gone?”

Also on the set list was a beautiful cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams,” and “Boardwalk,” a sweet song accented by trilling notes from a Casio keyboard.

Danielle told me in an interview (coming soon to BestNewBands.com) that she tries to write music that people can make out to. I didn’t see a lot of people sucking face, but I did see plenty of couples dancing close to Paschal Coeur’s songs. For a last show, it was clearly a bittersweet and triumphant night for Paschal Coeur.

Because Paschal Coeur has run out of hard copies of their self-titled EP, they are offering a free download of it at their blog, This Heart Will Burn Right Out. Click the link to make their EP yours, for free!

Danielle and her new band, the Don’t Say Nos, have an upcoming performance at Bar Bar on December 18th. I will be there, camera in hand to document their new project!
