The New Pornographers are a unique blend of big personalities and even bigger musical talent. Despite logic, the star-stacked group consistently makes catchy, chorus-heavy pop-rock tunes to please the indie masses. They have just released their fifth album, “Together,” which means that they are currently touring, so now is your chance to see them live! My fellow Portlanders should head to the Crystal Ballroom this Friday (July 16) to catch The New Pornographers with guests The Dodos and Imaad Wasif.
If you’ve never been to a New Pornographers show, you are in for a treat. This group of veteran musicians knows how to work the stage and put on a show for their loyal fans, never forgetting to play older fan-favorites like “Letter from an Occupant,” “Mass Romantic,” and “Sing Me Spanish Techno.” Neko Case and Carl Newman are always in perfect harmony, maybe it’s the redhead thing, and Dan Bejar’s casual offerings are an occasional, but welcome, change of pace.
The best part about a New Pornographers show is undoubtedly shouting all choruses in unison with everyone else in attendance. If you think this is only for longtime fans, test this theory by bringing and unassuming friend along to the show. They too will end up singing along because a) the choruses to NP songs are simple and repetitive, and b) it’s fun! I would find it difficult to attend a New Pornographers show and just watch, so be ready to dance and sing along in general merriment, because hey, why not? Enjoy the old favorites mentioned above and look out for new highlights “Your Hands (Together)” and “Up In The Dark.”
