The Black Angels: A Sinsational Musical Trip

TBA

The Black Angels show last night at the El Rey was completely sold out- and it was no surprise why- the group literally managed to blow everyone’s mind with their sweet psychadelia and heavy retro rock.

Now albeit I’m a total sucker for anything that remotely resembles something straight out of the golden age of no holds barred rock, the 1960s, and I completely fell in love with Jefferson Airplane/ Doors hybrid (check out “telephone” & “bad vibrations”) and safe to say it was an hour and fifteen minute set that had the entire audience musically mind-f***ed.  Had someone resurrected Morrison and neglected to send me the memo?

Now I’ve been to shows where people completely lose themselves in the music- but nothing thus far has compared to what I played witness to last night.  The entire audience swayed to and fro without intent, the music begging us all to fall deeper into the endless rabbit hole effortlessly constructed by The Black Angels.

One of the unique aspects of the TBA show was that rather than starting and stopping each song individually the entirety of the show just kept rhythmically flowing from one track into the next, and to say I along with the rest of the audience was unavoidably entranced is the understatement of the year.

I talked to several people, several TBA fans and music fiends alike and whether you had seen them once, five times, and whether or not you’d decided to partake in any mind expanding substance the general consensus was the same among everyone- TBA had once again knocked the entire set far out of the park, dragging us along with them into a whole different era where anything goes, and anything can happen.

You can find out where to follow TBA down the rabbit hole next by checking back at www.myspace.com/theblackangels, and I highly recommend leaving your regularly scheduled programming for one night to experience something from days of music past.  Just set your Delorean to 88 when the show’s over and head straight back to the future.
