This Thursday I will be attending my first-ever LA dubstep show at The Music Box, and you should too! The headliner is Excision, whose song  “Swagga” with Datsik is the one you’ve most likely already heard (see video below). I think it’s a perfect title for the song and dubstep in general, as it sounds like a mash up of the dirtiest techno and hip hop beats. And with all the wobbles and drops it’s hard not to swagger around while you’re listening to it. Not only is dubstep one of the latest electronic crazes to come out of the UK in the last few years, but it’s gaining mainstream exposure with features by Britney Spears on her latest single “Hold it Against Me” (see video below, the dubstep bridge happens at 2:45).The last time I went to a dubstep night, I nearly danced my shoes into the floor. Perhaps more imporantly, I left with that amazing afterglow you get from sharing an amazing experience with beautiful like-minded strangers.

So why should you shell out $30 to see a couple of DJ’s? To quote Cee-Lo (with Gnarls Barkley) “When was the last time you danced?” Besides, think of it this way: how many other artists that you’ve never heard of could possibly demand that much for a ticket if they weren’t planning on putting on a hell of a show? I mean, just look at either of the pictures of Excision above. How many artists can evoke that level of involvement from that many fans?  Furthermore,  I’ve found that most people I ask about dubstep either love it or hate it, and I think it was well described by a friend as “music you don’t necessarily hear, but music that you feel”.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the show sells out, because Excision is one of the top names in the game right now and the hardcore dubsteppers and candy kids will most likely be out in full raver regalia, and I do mean ‘kids’ as this is an all-ages show. Tickets are $30 in advance, which breaks down to about $17 a ticket plus $13 in fees. Come get your dance on Thursday night at The Music Box, and please visit their website for advance tickets here. The doors open at 8:00pm and the show starts at 9:00pm with opening performances by Downlink and Antiserum.
