Javier Dunn is gearing up to release his sophomore album, Trails, on June 25th (Red Parade Music) and to celebrate its first single, “Couple of Drinks,” the singer-songwriter held a remix contest. In the course of a month, over 100 musicians reworked the sparse electronic/acoustic hybrid of a song, and Dunn personally listened to each and every entry.
After narrowing the submissions down to a Top 10 list of candidates, he went to his fans to help him crown a winner. Jacob Grant’s slow-burning remix attracted an overwhelming amount of praise from Dunn’s fan base, and though the song writer was leaning toward choosing a different winner, he listened to his fans. “[Grant’s] song was totally unique, technically brilliant, cool in its interpretation of my parts, and just downright bangin’,” Dunn explains. “You can’t not dance to it.”Today, we are excited to officially announce the winner and premiere Jacob Grant’s remix of “Couple of Drinks.”
Grant susses out the sparse electronic presence in the original song, beginning with gradually adding innocuous electro bleeps and bloops before dropping into an instrumental dance break at the one minute mark. Though he enhanced the track’s instrumentation, he keeps Dunn’s smooth vocals as is, allowing them to soar over the electric soundscape he created.
Though Dunn was a bit skeptical of the contest at first, the outcome made him change his mind. “The remix contest was a great success, and I think perhaps indicative of the future fan/artist interactive relationship vis a vis the music industry,” he comments. We think you just might be onto something, Mr. Dunn….Listen to the original version of “Couple of Drinks” below.
