We don’t usually feature videos on BestNewBands.com unless they are brand-spankin’-new, but we decided to make an exception for thatwasthen’s “Angel Gabrielle.” Though the video was released only earlier this month, it has already garnered an impressive 39,000+ views (and counting) on YouTube. And rightfully so.
The band self-produced and self-directed the video near Malibu, CA at the end of 2012—all in one take. Though the concept is modest—the camera doesn’t move for the whole 4 and-a-half minutes and features each of the band members simply playing acoustic instruments and singing—the location is breathtaking and the song itself is a chilling ballad. With the help of the HDR effect on an SLR camera, and some manipulation from production company Dan Original, the Los Angeles-based quartet managed to create a soaring video as ethereal as its namesake.
The song appears on the four-piece’s recently released EP, Make Way, and for all you Southern Californian readers, thatwasthen is playing a slew of local shows in the coming weeks, including Silverlake Lounge in L.A. on January 29, Zona in San Clemente on February 1, Infusion Lounge at Universal CityWalk on February 6 and Jimmy Love’s in San Diego on February 27.
