The Winter Sounds Premiere Creative Video For “Shoulders Above”

The Winter Sounds is a dedicated band, to say the least. The quartet has been making music together since 2007, and in that short amount of time has played 500 shows and released five records, three of which were full-length LPs. In November, the indie pop collective dropped its latest album, Runner , and today we are excited to premiere the music video for its latest single, “Shoulders Above.”

The song’s story is an interesting one. It was written for a friend who gave the band a generous Kickstarter donation years ago. As part of the deal, she supplied the ideas behind the lyrics–a love story that begins in desperation. A child comes into the world and there is a bond that grows stronger than anything you could have imagined, so that your life, in retrospect, is exactly what it was supposed to be.

Though the premise is both beautiful and heartbreaking, The Winter Sounds take away any sort of despair with their upbeat, energetic musical structure, producing an anthemic indie pop gem. The video portrays this evolutional concept in its most logical form. With the help of brother/sister artists Team Kolendo, the video is a flip through of the book of evolution, starting with hand-drawn and hand-animated single-cellular creatures and ending with the band playing, while landscapes pop up through the book’s pages.
