The principal duo of Kevin and Anita Robinson, better known to the masses as Viva Voce, is back on the scene with their first new record since 2009’s Rose City. The Future Will Destroy You is the outfit’s first album with Vanguard and for the Portland-based via Muscle Shoals band, this is one of their finest works yet.

The Future Will Destroy You kicks off with “Plästic Rädio,” which has a cool keyboard, heavyish guitars and a cool drumbeat. The sound is reminiscent of Morning Glory-era Oasis had it come out in 2011. Anita’s vocals are cool and fit in well with the music, not overextending or trying to do something different. “Plästic Rädio” is sure to be a favorite of the psychedlic-indie rock lover and sets the tone for what album is going to sound like.

“Analog Woodland Song” is more of a driving rocker that maintains its indie edge, while having a mainstream, arena rock feel. The chord progressions are cool and the lo-fi guitar gives the track character and is the perfect soundtrack to your drive up the PCH (or any coastal area for that matter), which has the feel and brightness of summer.

Moving along, the next track, “Diamond Mine” is very different than the previous tunes. This one feels like a cross between Beck and Blonde Redhead, if you can imagine such a combination. There’s an aura of dream pop, while maintaining an indie folk sensibility.

Viva Voce managed to release some of their finest work on this record. For a band that has been around for a bit, that is no small feat. Producers Robinson did a terrific job of having no sound alike, yet kept it distinctly their own. There isn’t a moment here where you feel like the band is trying too hard, and that makes for an enjoyable listen. The record is very well balanced and if you don’t snag a copy, you are going to be missing out on one of the best albums not only of the summer, but the year so far.
