Showlistla

Picked By: Lauren Novik

As seems to happen more often than not- the City of Angels is turning into the City That Never Sleeps, and offering residents way too many choices to appease their musical craving.  This Tuesday, October 12 the Viper Room will play host to ShowListLA’s lineup that promises to be a rocking good time- complete with Dirt Dress and That Noise among others!  Ten dollars at the door and you twenty-one and ups are in for a sweet auditory surprise!  Then to keep feeding your inner music fiend- this Wednesday Frightened Rabbit is performing at the Mayan in Los Angeles- I literally dig them so much I tried to head back home to Vancouver to get a double dose, but alas- it seems I’ll have to wait a few more days- and well worth the extra man hours I might add!  Kids of all ages, twenty-somethings and the like can grab tickets HERE for about $28.60!  Kickstart your “Winter Of Mixed Drinks” in style at the Mayan this Wednesday-hope to see you all there!

SmokeOut_Festival_Flyer

Picked By: Laurel Johnston

This Saturday, October 16th, Nos Events Center in San Bernadino, California will host the Cypress Hill SmokeOut Festival. to the festival this year is the inclusion of a restricted consumption section for medical marijuana patients, sponsored by Cypress Hill, Guerilla Union Production Company, and Americans for Safe Access. There will also be expert discussion panels regarding the many uses of hemp and the legalization of marijuana.  As festival organizers, it seems only fitting that Cypress Hill plans on playing their eponymous debut album from cover to cover. But there are many other artists worth mentioning among the twenty-five scheduled to play on three stages, and it seems as if the festival organizers sought to provide every popular genre with smoking hot acts. As far as hip hop is concerned, soul queen Erykah Badu has a corner on the female artist market at the festival (if not the entire festival in general). Not far behind is dynamic duo Damian Marley and Nas with their ingenious blend of reggae, rap, and hip hop. As far as more mainstream reggae acts go, California’s own Slightly Stoopid will be performing along with New Orleans/Bermuda reggae artist Collie Buddz. Indie and candy kids, not to fear: MGMT, and the ever-evolving pop rock group Incubus will also be playing headlining spots. Adding the world-renowned Paul Oakenfold, much buzzed about Deadmau5, and electronic/house/dub artist Basement Jaxx satisfies the must-have killer DJ requirement. There’s even a healthy assortment of international acts, including Spain’s guitarist/multi-linguist Manu Chao, Mexico’s Latin ska outfit Maldita Vecindad, and Panamanian experimental hip hop group Los Rakas. If you’re in the mood for a delicious melting pot of music, arts, and expert information about the various uses of hemp and its by-products, then the SmokeOut Festival is for you!

Nos Events Center is located at 689 South E. Street in San Bernardino, California. The SmokeOut Festival is an all day all-ages event, and doors will open at noon. General admission tickets are $75, VIP tickets are $200, and High Roller VIP tickets are $420. For a full lineup, more ticketing information, and a complete list of regulations regarding the restricted consumption area, please visit the website listed below. Join this writer and many others for this unique, landmark festival happening just outside of Los Angeles!
