Artist of the Week: Delta Spirit

San Diego-born, Brooklyn-based Delta Spirit have enjoyed steady degree of success since their formation, but this could be the year that the band becomes less of journeyman outfit into an outfit that cements itself into the psyche of music fans. Since the release of their self-titled, third full-length album, was the band’s highest charting to date. It was No. 1 on the Heatseekers Album Chart, while peaking at a not too shabby No. 103 on Billboard’s Top 200.

It’s been a bit of an arduous climb for the band that combines elements of indie rock with Americana and soul to complete their sound. In fact, if not for a chance encounter, then the band may have never came to be. After playing in multiple bands together, Jon Jameson and Brandon Young decided to form a new outfit with their friend Sean Walker. Like any budding outfit, they need a couple of more pieces, in this case, a singer. Enter Matt Vasquez.

The old cliché goes that nothing good happens after 2 a.m. (or something like that), but Young saw Vasquez busking on a bench at that hour and needless to say, he was impressed with what he saw. The two exchanged numbers and thus, the partnership began. Next up was a name, and they eventually settled on Delta Spirit in honor of Jameson’s Uncle Red, who ran the Delta Spirit Taxidermy Station of North Central Alabama.

From there, the band has recorded and released three LPs and two EPs, but they’ve become known for their energetic live shows that often times feel like a spiritual revival, one of which had a chance to check out earlier this year. They tour schedule is grueling, which means that they’re likely to hit your town a couple of times a year and as Vasquez has told us in the past, means that they even have to spend Thanksgiving on the road.

The band has seen their profile grow, with their songs appearing on programs ranging from Sons Of Anarchy to UFC Primetime: Velasquez Vs. Dos Santos, in addition to playing some of the biggest festivals in the States this year, including strong set times at Coachella, Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits. To further prove the band’s growing stature, they were invited to record a set for both HearYa Live Session, which was filmed during but not at Lollapalooza, and the Austin City Limits television series, which airs on PBS. Musicians like Johnny Cash, Allman Brothers Band, My Morning Jacket, Oasis, Pearl Jam and too many amazing groups to name have played on the show, which has going strong since 1976, so Delta Spirit is good company.

As they’re set to embark on their fall tour with BestNewBands faves JEFF The Brotherhood and FIDLAR, Delta Spirit’s brighter days are ahead of them. Though album sales are hardly an indicator to a band’s progress, in this case, it shows that their music is slowly catching on the public, another sign that relentless touring, memorable live shows and sneaky good songs can be the formula for a successful band.
