Artist of the Week: Lord Huron

Over the past few years, the genre of indie folk has become more prevalent and relevant in music. With bands like Band of Horses, My Morning Jacket, Fleet Foxes and even Bon Iver defining the genre, it’s easy to see why so many fans have caught on to this brand of really good new music. One of the latest bands to emerge from this scene is Los Angeles’ Lord Huron.

Originally the solo project of lead singer Ben Schneider, the band has grown to include Mark Barry (percussion, vocals), Miguel Briseno (bass, percussion), Brett Farkas (guitar, vocals) and Tom Renaud (guitar, vocals). But like many bands, the focus of their origins begins with the lead singer.

Born in Michigan, Schneider became transfixed by music when he was a child, when he began noodling around on his father’s acoustic guitar. After playing multiple instruments over the years and studying art in both France and New York City, the singer decided to take the plunge and move to Los Angeles to pursue his musical aspirations full time.

After navigating the treacherous waters of the Los Angeles scene, in 2010, Schneider journeyed back home to Michigan where he found his inspirations on the banks of Lake Huron, which for those of you who don’t know or simply failed geography, is one of the Great Lakes. It was here where he drew inspiration and wrote the songs that would comprise his Into The Sun EP. From there, he released a second EP, Mighty, in that same year and he started to play live with the band.

Receiving critical acclaim for his EPs, Lord Huron set out to conquer the murky seas of the road. They played well-received shows at festivals including South by Southwest, Outside Lands and Lollapalooza. Mark Barry and Tom Renaud, childhood friends of Schneider, moved to Los Angeles to join Lord Huron. Miguel Briseno and Brett Farkas also originally hail from Michigan. The now quintet dazzled fans across the country without a full-length to their. But that would change in due time.

Earlier this year, the band released their first album earlier this year, which was lauded by many and with good reason: it was great. Lord Huron has established themselves in a short period of time as one of the must-see bands in both Los Angeles and on the top of the charts in the indie folk scene. Already playing to packed rooms in their adopted hometown, 2013 should see the band soar to heights they would have never expected when Schneider first sat in front of that great lake and first wrote the songs that would serve as the foundation for his latest band.
